Nature's Best Kept Secret: Trekking to Iriomotejima Island’s Six Best Waterfalls

Iriomote Island is the second largest island in Okinawa Prefecture after Okinawa Island, the main island.

About 90% of Iriomote Island is covered with jungle and is called Galapagos of the East.

It is said that there are more than 100 waterfalls in Iriomote Island where such untouched nature exists.

Some of them can only be reached by kayak or by stand up paddleboarding.

But there are people who don't want to kayak, and would rather walk in the wilderness with gusto.

So this time, I, who live in Okinawa Prefecture, will introduce six waterfalls in Iriomote Island that can be approached only by trekking!

1. Kura Falls

Kura Falls in Iriomote Ishigaki National Park is a waterfall that can be reached by trekking in about 15 minutes one way.

The trekking time is short, and although it is a small waterfall with a maximum drop of about 5 meters, it is a popular waterfall because of its relaxing atmosphere in the secluded nature.

You can go there by kayak or SUP (stand up paddleboarding) and enjoy the charm of Iriomote Island.

The mystical atmosphere of the waterfall makes the time to sit and relax and watch the waterfall a luxury itself.

Across from the waterfall, there is a swing of the world's largest beanstalk modama vine, so it is recommended to play on the swing or take a rest.

2. Yutsun Waterfall

Yutsun Falls located in the upper stream of Yutsun River which flows out of the northeast part of Iriomote Island is recommended for people who like walking and jungle.

It takes less than two hours each way to reach the falls, so you can fully enjoy the trekking.

Yutsun Falls is a three-stage waterfall and is very powerful.

The altitude above the waterfall is 250 meters, which is the highest waterfall on the trekking course of Iriomote Island.

The view of the magnificent sky, sea, and jungle seen from the top of the waterfall is breathtaking, and you can feel the great nature.

The scenery along the way is also wonderful, and you will be able to enjoy the jungle of Iriomote Island to the fullest.

This trekking course is full of attractions such as beautiful moist moss, feeling a fantastic atmosphere, and walking on a monolith that is much larger than you can imagine!

3. Maya Rock Waterfall

Maya Rock Falls is a waterfall located at a little off the beaten path on the way to ‘Yutun Falls’ introduced earlier.

It takes about 45 minutes to get there one way, so it is one of the recommended waterfalls for those who want to get a good workout.

It is a relatively uncrowded place at any time of the year, so it is also recommended for those who want to relax and admire the waterfalls in Okinawa.

Also known as twin waterfalls, the two main waterfalls flow side by side. How cute, isn't it?

4. Geda Waterfall

Geda Waterfall is located in the eastern part of Iriomote Island, and it takes about one hour one way to climb a stream.

The path is very beautiful, and you can enjoy the green world created by the plants of Iriomote Island. Because of its beauty, the waterfall is popular among guides.

The course to see Geda Waterfall is short, only one hour one way, but you can see three waterfalls in that time. Since each one is different, it is recommended to take a break at each waterfall.

Once you reach the top of the third waterfall, the view from there is spectacular!

It is a treat that only those who have made the climb can see, so be sure to see it in person.

5. Mariyudu Falls

Mariyudu Falls located in the upper stream of ‘Urauchi River’ which flows through the center of Iriomote Island is a beautiful waterfall selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.

Since it is not possible to get close to the waterfall, you can view it from an observation deck a short distance away.

A sightseeing boat from Urauchi River Sightseeing takes you to the upper reaches of the Urauchi River, and from there it is about a 30-minute trek to the observatory.

The well-maintained trekking course is recommended for beginners.

Signs and restrooms are provided, so it is possible to go on your own without a guide.

The cruise boat takes about 30 minutes one way, and the guide of the cruise boat will tell you various stories about plants and animals in Iriomote Island, so you can enjoy your time on the boat as well.

Please enjoy the cruise ship leisurely while enjoying the great nature scenery!

The waterfall is about 200 meters long, and as you approach it, you will be overwhelmed by its power.

Campire means seat of God in the local dialect and is considered a sacred place.

Please visit there together with Maryudu Falls.
