Exploring Vegan-Friendly Ekiben Options at Kyoto Station

Vegetarians and vegans must be concerned about what they eat while traveling.

Many Kyoto specialties are compatible with vegetarians, such as tofu, yuba (bean curd), fu (wheat gluten), and pickles.

However, we often hear people say, “It is difficult to find vegetarian ekiben at Kyoto station.″

So, in this article, I, a Kyoto resident, will report the results of my research to see if there are any vegetarian or vegan ekiben available locally!

Are There Vegetarian Ekiben Available at Kyoto Station?

As it turns out, there are no vegetarian or vegan ekiben available at Kyoto Station.

If you prefer to take out, you can choose from bakeries in the station building, or you can buy salads, soba noodles, udon noodles, onigiri, etc. at convenience stores in Kyoto.

MUJI in the underground Kyoto Porta and in the AEON MALL Kyoto, a 5-minute walk from the Hachijo Exit of Kyoto Station, sell carrot cake made from plant ingredients, raisin and fig cereal cookies, and four kinds of nut cereal cookies.

One option would be to fill up on snacks and visit a vegetarian or vegan restaurant on the move.

Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurants Within Walking Distance From Kyoto Station

As mentioned above, there are currently no vegetarian or vegan ekiben available at Kyoto Station, but there are several vegetarian and vegan restaurants within walking distance of Kyoto Station.

If you have time to spare, you may want to visit one of them.

1. Hachidori Table

Hachidori Table, a 14-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station, offers a casual menu of curry rice, udon noodles, and other dishes made with plant-based ingredients, mainly soybean meat (but some dairy and egg are used).

The restaurant is a safe place for vegetarians, vegans, and health-conscious people, and is well known for its easy-to-digest, low-burden dishes.

The restaurant does not use “five pungent roots” such as leek, rakkyo, garlic, onion, and chives, which certain vegans avoid.

The restaurant also accommodates allergies when possible, which is appreciated!

2. Miyako Yasai Kamo Kyoto Ekimae Branch

Located a 15-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station, the buffet-style restaurant Miyako Yasai Kamo Kyoto Ekimae offers all-you-can-eat fresh vegetables harvested that morning in Kyoto.

This attractive restaurant offers a healthy and luxurious menu of organic or reduced-chemical vegetables grown by Kyoto farmers.

In addition to vegetables, you can choose from a wide variety of dishes such as obanzai (side dishes), soups, and curries that use seaweed and soy milk.

The rice used is also grown in Kyoto.

Lunch is inexpensive at 1,290 yen on weekdays and 1,560 yen on weekends and holidays (tax included), and reservations can be made through the official website.

Please note that reservations cannot be made by phone.

3. Kyo-Tofu Fujino

Located on the 11th floor of JR Kyoto Isetan adjacent to Kyoto Station.

Known for its tofu cuisine, Kyo-Tofu Fujino is an attractive restaurant with a view of the city of Kyoto from some seats.

You can enjoy Kyoto-style cuisine that makes the most of fresh tofu and soy milk, as only a tofu store can, as well as seasonal ingredients.

The variety of healthy tofu dishes, such as oboro to-fu, fresh yuba sashimi, and deep-fried tofu, make it a must-try when you come to Kyoto.

Lunch starts at 2,310 yen. Dinner is from 3,960 yen.

Other Options

In addition, Mimikou, an udon restaurant located in the Kyoto Porta underground shopping mall in Kyoto Station, offers Kyoto kitsune curry udon with deep-fried tofu (konbu and dried bonito flakes are used for the broth) and at Tagoto, a soba noodle restaurant, you can enjoy a variety of soba noodles that do not contain meat, fish, or eggs.

If you are in doubt, try visiting Kyoto Porta near the station.

There Are No Vegetarian or Vegan Ekiben at Kyoto Station, but You Can Get Creative and Enjoy Them!

So far, we have not found any vegetarian or vegan ekiben available at Kyoto Station.

However, there are several vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurants near Kyoto Station, so be sure to enjoy your lunch or dinner in the Kyoto Station area.
