A Guide to Otaru’s Poké Lid Manhole Cover: What Does the Design Look Like?

What are Poké Lids?

Poké Lids are manhole covers which has been forged & painted with special Pokémon illustrations.

Pokémon Co., Ltd. donates these manhole covers to local governments with the aim of promoting the attractiveness of various regions in Japan through Pokémon.

Rumor has it that someone has drawn a picture of the hole dug by the mole Pokémon Diglett as a mark of the hole :)

Since the memorable first one was installed on December 20, 2018 in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, located in the south of Japan, more than 300 lids have been installed to date.

The city name "Ibusuki" kind of sounds like the popular Pokémon Eevee, and they came up with the word play "Eevee suki = Ibusuki" ("suki" 好き means "like" in Japanese), which then ended up with them installing Eevee manhole covers. It's a nice and playful attraction, isn't it?

Incidentally, Poké Lids are currently linked to the location-based game Pokémon Go for smartphones, and are set up as PokéStops where you can obtain items in the game.

Poké Lids are also a hot spot for Pokémon Go enthusiasts.

The Poké Lid in Otaru City, Hokkaido, depict the Alolan Vulpix, a ice type Pokémon that can freeze anything by breathing out a breath of minus 50 degrees Celsius from its mouth.

The azalea, designated as Otaru City's flower, and the stained glass windows of the Stained Glass Museum, a famous sightseeing spot in Otaru, are used in the design, and the Alolan Vulpix's cuteness is highlighted in the design!

This beautiful Poké Lid is perfect for Otaru City, with its retro townscape.

The Alolan Vulpix is a white fox Pokémon that lives in the snowy mountains, making it a perfect Pokémon for Hokkaido, one of Japan's snowiest regions and home to many foxes.

Located in an arcade, the manhole is not buried by snow even in snowy Otaru, and can be seen even during midwinter sightseeing.
