Understanding Sapporo Streetcar Fares: Can You Use Suica for Payment?

The Sapporo Streetcar runs in a loop from the center of Sapporo City in Hokkaido to the west side of the city.

The streetcars are used by many Sapporo citizens and tourists, and you can enjoy the retro cars, the latest futuristic cars, and the winter-only “Snowy Miku (Hatsune Miku)” fully-wrapped cars.

In this article, I, a resident of Sapporo, will introduce how to pay the Sapporo Streetcar fare.

How to pay the Sapporo Streetcar fare

The Sapporo Streetcar is a ‘pay when you get off’ system, so you do not need to take a numbered ticket or touch your IC card when you get on the streetcar.

There are three ways to pay the fare: cash, IC cards, and pre-purchased tickets. I will outline them below!

By the way, you can also use Suica, so don't worry.

1. Paying by cash

If you want to pay by cash, put money into the fare box when you get off the bus.

If you are unfamiliar with the system, it is a good idea to have some change ready before boarding.

2. Paying with IC cards (incl. Suica)

Various IC cards ic card

Various IC cards including Suica, Pasmo, Kitaca, and SAPICA are accepted on the Sapporo Streetcar.

Please check which IC cards are accepted in advance.

To pay the Sapporo Streetcar fare with an IC card, touch the card to the IC card reader located near the fare box when you get off the bus.

If your IC card has no balance, you can recharge it in the car by telling the driver while the train is stopped.

However, it is recommended to recharge your IC card in advance if possible to ensure a smooth exit from the bus.

3. Pre-purchased tickets and mobile tickets

Sapporo Streetcar also sells tickets and mobile tickets that can be purchased in advance.

You can purchase tickets such as “24-hour Tram Pass”, “Streetcar One-Day Pass”, “Dosanko Pass”, etc., which are popular among tourists, at the ticket counter or online in advance.

If you wish to purchase tickets at the ticket counter, you can visit the Odori Ticket Office near Odori Subway Station.
