The number of visitors in Japan has risen steadily over the years.
Within Japan, Osaka has become one of the most popular cities to visit, alongside other desitinations like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hokkaido.
Some people may question why Osaka ranks so high.
In this article, I, an Osaka resident, will write the 3 reasons why Osaka consistently ranks as one of the most beloved tourist destinations.
- Reason 1: Wonderful attractions
- Reason 2: Irresistable food
- Reason 3: Unmatched hospitality
- When in Japan, don't forget to visit Osaka
Reason 1: Wonderful attractions
The first reason why Osaka is so beloved, is that this city is home to many wonderful attractions.
There are literally countless places to visit. Near infinite amounts of fun is to be had here, whether you're staying for a couple of days, weeks or even months.
Check out the following selection of the most popular attractions.
1. Universal Studios Japan
Universal Studios Japan, located in Osaka City, is one of the five Universal Studio theme parks in the world. This is one of the most revered theme parks in Japan, alongside Tokyo DisneyLand & DisneySea.
Out of all things, this is one of the most popular attractions in Osaka. Youths are the most popular demographic, closely followed by families with small children. There's fun to be had by everyone.
Not only does this place have many rides and popular photo spots, there are regular events held within the park to keep everybody entertained at all hours.
2. Grand Front Osaka
Grand Front Osaka is a super popular shopping mall located close by the JR Osaka & Hankyu Umeda train stations.
There are more than 200 shops in the building, including popular Japanese fashion brands, interior shops, sundry shops, book stores, restaruants, and cafes. You can buy all sorts of souvenirs here, as well as the latest display of Japan-made goods.
Of course there are a miriad of other places to go to when it comes to shopping in Osaka, but Grand Front has a strong, solid selection of the best shops in Japan. Many people even say this place was their highlight when visiting Japan.
3. Expo Commemorative Park
The Expo Commemorative Park is a popular destination for people looking for serene nature. It is also the place where the Tower of the Sun, known as one of the symbols of Osaka, stands.
Within this large park, you may find various seasonal flowers, birds, waterfalls, and all sorts of seasonal natural spectacles that gleams that Japanese aesthetic.
Aside from nature, many events and festivals are regularly held in the open spaces, making this a great destination for both excitement and relaxation.
Reason 2: Irresistable food
The second reason why Osaka has become the beloved destination it is now, is its food.
Out of all the local cuisines in Japan, the ones in Osaka are known for being the most palatable for people with all kinds of backgrounds.
This is especially true for the "Konamon" dishes (粉もん lit. "flour things"), like takoyaki and okonomiyaki. These dishes are universally loved by all types of people.
It is no surprise that visitors often list takoyaki and okonomiyaki as their favorite Japanese food.
An abundance of good food is always a plus in my book.
Reason 3: Unmatched hospitality
The third and final reason why Osaka is loved by foreign visitors, is its display of hospitality.
In Japan, Osaka is often referred to as "the city of compassion" or "the city of laughs." The people in Osaka are generally known for their human qualitty.
They often entertain visitors from other countries, just to make their stay more enjoyable.
Many people who have come all the way from overseas to visit Osaka do everything they can to make the place more lively and enjoyable.
For example, in drug stores in Osaka, store clerks are trained to accommodate foreign customors through the usage of "foreigner help manuals".
The foreigner help manual is a type of communication tool composed of lists for different types of drugs with their intended usage & effects written in English, Chinese, and Korean. It also includes many illustrations to help communicate.
Isn't it nice to know that you have easier access to necessary treatments in case you fell ill?
These types of "sabisu" (サービス lit. "service" as in hospitality) provided by the people of Osaka makes this a great place for every person to visit.
When in Japan, don't forget to visit Osaka
Though one may have a general idea of what Osaka is like through reading guide books and watching videos, you have to visit the place to get the true Osakan experience.
