What is Godfield? Basic Rules and Winning Strategies.

ゴッドフィールド

Recently, we often see popular streamers inviting others to “play ‘Goffi’ since the match time is long” during breaks between games.

Goffi” is the abbreviation for “Godfield,” which is a card battle game that has gained popularity due to its appeal as a casual game.

This article will explain what “Godfield” is, its basic rules, and winning strategies.

What is “Godfield”?

Godfieldis a “turn-based card battle game” played online.

It was released as a Web browser game in 2013, and the app version was released in 2020. It is currently available on iPhone and Android.

The rule is that players battle using cards called “Divine Artifacts,” and when the “HP of” either the opponent or themselves “becomes 0,” they “Ascend” = “Lose“.

Generally, card battle games often have many effects per card, making them feel “difficult to remember,” but “Godfield” is a “card game with a strong element of luck,” so simplicity—where only the “rules” need to be learned—is one reason for its popularity.

Although there are certain strategies, whether or not “the right card comes up is the key to victory or defeat,” meaning that beginners can fight advanced players soon after getting used to the game.

Basic Rules of “Godfield”

The basic rules of the popular card game “Godfield” are as follows:

Rule 1. Victory by making the opponent “Ascend”

In “Godfield,” as mentioned above, there is a rule that the game ends when either the opponent or oneself “Ascends (HP becomes 0)”.

To reduce the opponent’s HP to 0, players fight by attacking with weapons or defending against the opponent’s attacks with armor. A key feature of “Godfield” is that cards are distributed randomly, and players must fight only with the cards they are dealt.

Since most card battle games are strategic games where players battle using a “deck”—a set of cards chosen by the player—Godfield can be said to be simpler and easier to enjoy, as it requires no prior strategy.

There is no way to revive used cards, and the system randomly adds cards from over 500 types to the player’s hand.

Since there is no need to spend time constructing a deck, and the game can be easily started from a browser or app, it is recommended even for card game beginners.

Rule 2. Attack using “Weapons”

The main means of attack in “Godfield” is the “use of weapon cards“.
Weapon cards are displayed like “Attack 9 (攻9)” and generally, only one card can be used per turn.

As an exception, cards written as “+Attack 3 (+攻3)” can be added on top of the one weapon card usable per turn, increasing the damage dealt.

If a weapon card is not in hand, selecting “Pray” allows the player to draw one card and skip their turn.

Rule 3. Defense using “Armor”

In “Godfield,” when in defense, the goal is to “protect oneself from the opponent’s attack using armor cards“.

During the defense turn, only defense cards, written as “Guard 4 (守4)” for example, become highlighted, making it clear which cards can be used.
For instance, if the opponent uses a card labeled “Attack 7 (攻7),” using the defense card “Guard 4 (守4)” results in only “3” damage to oneself.

Unlike attack cards, “multiple defense cards can be used in one turn,” so it is recommended to defend against attacks to minimize damage, ideally reaching zero.

If a strategy of not defending is chosen, or if no defense cards are available, clicking (or tapping) beneath the name proceeds to the next phase.

Rule 4. Strategy using “Transaction Cards”

In “Godfield,” in addition to attack and defense, there are cards related to “Transaction“. Mastering these cards strengthens the strategic element.

Buy: Randomly view the opponent’s hand and choose whether to purchase a card.
Sell: Choose one card from your hand and sell it to the opponent.
Exchange: Allocate HP, MP, and Dollar ($, possessed currency) as desired.

MP is used for magical attacks (like “Miracles” cards) and $ is consumed for buying and selling cards.

“Miracle” cards (奇跡) are a type of magic card that can be used semi-permanently by consuming MP.

Strategies involving exchanging (converting) HP into MP to use “Miracles,” or using “Sell” to decrease the opponent’s $, are reputed to be fun.

Note that if $ is insufficient, the resources are deducted in the order of “$ → MP → HP,” allowing for strategies designed to deplete $ first.

Winning Strategies in Godfield

Godfield” is a card game with a strong element of luck, but the ability to “quickly formulate a strategy from a limited hand of cards” is also crucial.

In addition to strategies involving weapons, armor, and transactions, there are cards that are considered “the strongest if drawn,” which should be checked.

Strategy 1. Be Aware of Card Attributes

It is recommended to be mindful not only of attack and defense numerical values but also of “attributes“.

Attribute attacks can only be defended against by specific attributes, and if you are lucky, “one-turn kills” are possible.

For example, a “Fire Attribute” attack can only be defended against by a “Water Attribute” defense.

There are also the undefendable “Heaven Attribute” and the “Dark Attribute,” which results in instant death (Ascension) if the attack is not defended. The “Heaven Attribute” can be used when you “definitely want to inflict damage” among all attributes.

Since taking even 1 damage from a “Dark Attribute Attack” results in instant death when you don’t have attribute armor in hand, it is safe to “keep 1 or 2 attribute armor cards available“.

Strategy 2. Causing Calamities

In “Godfield,” there are also “Calamities” (災い), which are “status ailments“.

These status ailments can cause damage every turn (like “Poison”) or result in “instant death (Ascension) with a certain probability”.

For example, a strategy exists to recover HP by intentionally contracting “Heaven Sickness,” which is a double-edged sword as it causes “Ascension” if a seizure occurs.

Strategy 3. Summoning Guardian Deities

In “Godfield,” you can “Summon a Guardian Deity” that can cause attribute attacks or “Calamities” by using a “Guardian Sealing Jar” or “Release”.

Guardian Deities can perform attribute attacks or restore HP and MP. They take attribute-related actions with a 25% probability, so it is recommended to try summoning at the appropriate timing.

Since the Guardian Deity has a 10% chance of disappearing when receiving damage from the opponent, it is recommended to aim for zero damage if you have one summoned.
