Shinojima Sunset

I went to Shino Island in Minamichita-cho, Aichi Prefecture.

Shino Island is a remote island located about 1 hour away from Nagoya. The sunset from the west side of the island is beautiful, and has been selected as one of the 100 Best Sunsets in Japan.

It is an ideal place for sightseeing, with beautiful white beaches for swimming and fishing.

Recently, Himakashima Island has become a famous sightseeing spot in this area, but if you want to spend a relaxing time, we also recommend Shino Island, which is full of nature.

In this article, we will introduce how to get to Shino Island, a secluded and recommended sightseeing spot in Aichi Prefecture, as well as recommended places to stay!

What Is the Charm of Shino Island?

Shinojima Sunset

Located in Minamichita-cho, Aichi Prefecture, Shino Island is a remote island recommended for those who want to spend a relaxing time in nature.

It is also often referred to as the Matsushima of the Tokai Region. Many people visit the island in the summer for swimming, and it is a popular spot to spend a relaxing time throughout the year.

Shino Island has been selected as one of the 100 best places to watch the sunset in Japan, and if the weather is fine, you can see a beautiful sunset.

When I went there this time, there were some clouds, so I could not see the sunset until the moment it was about to set, but it was very beautiful nonetheless.

Also, Shino Island is a place where the currents of Mikawa Bay and Ise Bay meet, so you can taste fresh seafood.

One of the specialties of Shinoshima is fugu (blowfish).

Shinoshima’s torafugu boasts a catch that rivals that of Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture, one of Japan’s most famous fugu production centers.

I actually ate fugu sashimi and fugu nabe at the inn where I stayed, which I will introduce later, and they were really fresh and delicious.

Shino Island, with its abundance of seafood, is a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts, and there is even a managed fishing pond called Shinojima Fishing Paradise in the sea.

Many fish such as sea bream, yellowtail, horse mackerel, etc. are released, and the spot is crowded with locals and tourists during the season.

Just imagining a holiday trip where you can enjoy a relaxing fishing trip, eat lots of delicious seafood, and refresh your body and soul is exciting, isn’t it?

The islanders are also very friendly, making it a recommended destination for those who are looking for a relaxing vacation.

Access to Shino Island

Since Shino Island is a remote island, you can reach it by ferry or high-speed boat.

The main ferry and high-speed boat routes are from Shisaki Port, Kowa Port, and Irago Port.

For this trip, I drove to Katana Port and took a boat to Shino Island, but if you are going by train from Nagoya Station, you can take a high-speed boat from Kowa Port.

From Meitetsu Shin Nagoya Station, go to Meitetsu Kowa Station (about 50 minutes), walk to Kowa Port, and take a 25-minute ride on the ocean sightseeing boat to reach Shino Island.

If you take the airport bus from Chubu International Airport (Centrair), you will arrive at Kowa Station, where Kowa Port is located, in about 50 minutes.

Recommended Accommodations in Shino Island

The sunset is not the only thing that impressed me at Shino Island.

Above all, the inn where we stayed was very nice…!

Shino Island’s Gifuya Ryokan

Gifuya Ryokan Shino Island

I stayed at an inn called Gifuya Ryokan Shino Island this time.

Gifuya Ryokan has a view of the ocean from its rooms, with the beach in front of it.

It is a great way to stay in a room with an ocean view at a reasonable price!

The direction of the sunset is opposite, so you have to go to the other side of the island to see the sunset, but the room overlooking the ocean was very special.

Incidentally, although there is a slope, it is only a 10-minute walk from the inn to the other side of the island.

In the mornings, we could even view the sunrise from our rooms.

I could not see the moment of sunrise because of the trees, but I heard that in another season, you can see the moment of sunrise from your room.

The view is not the only attraction of Gifuya Ryokan.

The dinner we had was also exquisite!

Below is the Japanese spiny lobster that was served for dinner. It’s very gorgeous, isn’t it?

Shino Island is famous for fugu (blowfish) and octopus, so we were able to taste fugu sashimi & nabe, tempura, octopus, lobster, and other dishes at dinner at the inn.

The fresh and sumptuous dishes served one after another made me think I was in a dreamland.

Fugu etc.

The octopus was so tender and easy to eat, more so than I expected!

The breakfast was also surprisingly sumptuous, so if you are looking for a delicious meal, be sure to stay at the Gifuya Ryokan!
