Exhibit Report: Toyota Miraidon Project in Tokyo Midtown Hibiya

From March 15 to 17, 2024, an exhibition of the legendary Pokémon Miraidon was held for three days at Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, a commercial facility located near Hibiya subway station in Tokyo.

At the event, visitors were able to take pictures with the TOYOTA Engineering society MIRAIDON, an accurate, almost life-size model of the legendary Pokémon, Miraidon. Many adults and children lined up for tickets.

An introduction to Miraidon

Miraidon, the legendary Pokémon that first appeared in Pokémon SV, is a dragon-like Pokémon that appears only in Pokémon Violet.

In Pokémon Violet, Miraidon serves as the main character's sidekick and can walk on four legs (Low-Power Mode), become a motorcycle-like vehicle on two wheels (Drive Mode), or take on other forms depending on the situation.

Miraidon is one of the most popular Pokémon because of its strong performance in battle and its unique futuristic design that is unlike all other robot-type Pokémon.

Miraidon is popular not only among children but also among adults, because it gives a feeling that it takes you to a world never before seen.

The Toyota Miraidon Project was launched by Toyota employees

Miraidon, which existed only in the world of video games, was released into the real world by the hands of “Toyota Technical Association,” a group within Toyota Motor Corporation, one of Japan's leading automakers.

The Toyota Technical Association is a volunteer organization with a 70-year history, comprised of employees interested in technological development and research, and has continued its activities by exhibiting works in accordance with a theme at events held in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, where the company's head office is located.

And as a representation of the 2023 theme, “Miraimobility,” a life-size Miraidon was created. ("Mirai=未来" means "future" in Japanese.)

Other companies and engineers who agreed with the aim of conveying the message that “adults' earnestness becomes children's dreams” and "dreams don't end as dreams; imagination creates the future” offered their cooperation, and the project developed into the Toyota Miraidon Project, an activity that transcended the boundaries of the company.

This all cumulated in the completion of the “TOYOTA Engineering Society MIRAIDON,” the almost life-size moving Miraidon on display at the exhibition.

Test drive limited to 100 individuals

When I went to the event, MIRAIDON was in “drive mode,” but I heard that it can also transform into a “four-legged mode,” and I was very curious to see how it would transform and move.

I was told that only 100 individuals per day were available for test drives, and by the time I arrived at the event, the tickets have all been handed out, and I could sense that the event was very popular.

On the day of the event, there were many staff members from Toyota Motor Corporation, and it was impressive to see how they cooperated in the operation of the event.

It is wonderful that this project allows both children and adults to dream through Pokémon.

There is a possibility that exhibitions and events will be held in other locations in the future, so if you are interested in this project, please check the following social media accounts of Toyota Motor Corporation for the latest information.

Next time, I will definitely test drive this one-of-a-kind vehicle.
